LEXINGTON, Ky. – Gardner-Webb experienced a national media frenzy unlike any it had seen following its monumental win over No. 20 Kentucky Wednesday night.
That frenzy was likely just the tip of the iceberg, as the Runnin’ Bulldogs (2-0) advance to Madison Square Garden for the semifinals of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic as a media darling.
By 2 am ET Thursday, the calls had generally ceased, but by that time head coach Rick Scruggs had already appeared on two national radio shows (Fox Sports and ESPN Radio), spent 30 minutes in a phone interview with ESPN college basketball analyst Andy Katz and fielded numerous other calls from national, regional and local media.
The Bulldogs’ win proved to be the lead story on Wednesday’s night’s ESPN SportsCenter, and Grayson Flittner’s twisting layup and three-point play was the top play on the show’s popular Top 10 feature.
By 2:30 am, Gardner-Webb’s win over the Wildcats had also taken over the lead spot on ESPN.com and SI.com, along with a host of other sports and newspaper websites.
The team is expected to arrive back on campus between 7:00 and 8:00 am on Thursday, arriving in Boiling Springs, N.C., via charter bus from Lexington.
