CLEMSON, S.C. – Seventh-ranked Clemson posted six runs in
the first two innings Thursday, and Gardner-Webb saw its three-game win streak
snapped with a 13-2 loss to the Tigers.
The Tigers (10-1) scored two runs in the first, and four in
the second to post a comfortable early margin, and added six runs in their
final three at bats to pad that lead. Gardner-Webb (5-8) scored a pair in the top
of the third inning, but would not get the offense rolling against four Tiger
pitchers.
Conner Scarborough (0-2)
took the loss, allowing six earned runs on nine hits and five walks in 4.0
innings of work in his second career start – with both coming against
nationally-ranked squads.
Daniel Merck collected three of Gardner-Webb’s seven hits on
the night, going 3-for-3 with an RBI double. Ty Boyles went 2-for-3 at the plate,
with Aaron Miller and O.J. McFarland added the other two Bulldog hits.
Clemson had 12 hits in the game, and belted three home runs
to power its offense.
Gaffney native Justin Sarratt picked up the win with 5.0
innings of work, allowing one earned run on two hits.
Gardner-Webb will host Valparaiso
on Friday at 5:00 pm in Gastonia, N.C., playing the first of three games this weekend at Sims Legion
Park.
