Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb men's and women's cross country teams ran at the Blue Ridge Open on Friday, hosted by Southern Conference member Appalachian State.
The race marked the final competition for the Runnin' Bulldogs prior to Big South Championships, which will be held October 29 in Conway, S.C.
Junior Ariel Zimmerman led the way for GWU in the women's 5K race, coming in 38th out of 141 runners in a time of 19:17.8. Zimmerman was followed by consecutive finishes from Elizabeth Glunk and Elisabeth Sawyer, who timed in at 20:32.0 and 20:37.3 respectively. Sophomore Ivana Hughes followed with a time of 21:52.7.
For the men, sophomore Mike McClay led the Runnin' Bulldogs with a 22nd place finish in the 8K, timing in at 25:47.1. Josiah Stanton-Brooks posted a time of 27:42.8 and Justin Loy and Trey Crook finished in 29:01.4 and 29:33.0 respectively in the Gardner-Webb's final tune-up for the conference championship meet.
GWU will take a week off to prepare for the Big South Championship meet on Saturday, October 29. The meet will take place on the campus of Coastal Carolina.
