Charlotte, N.C. - Gardner-Webb senior Courtney Finocchiaro was one of two Big South students to be chosen as a recipient of the Big South Conference's Sunbelt Rentals Scholarship, it was announced today.  Finocchiaro will each receive $2,000 from Sunbelt Rentals toward her final semester as an undergraduate, and becomes the first award recipient from Gardner-Webb University.

Finocchiaro, a member of the Gardner-Webb women's golf team, was recognized during GWU's home men's basketball game on Jan. 26. In addition, both individuals will be honored as part of the Big South's Spring Meetings and Hall of Fame Dinner on May 31.

Established in August 2008, the Sunbelt Rentals Scholarship program recognizes the work done in the classroom, campus and community by students within the Big South Conference.  To qualify, students must be enrolled in a Big South Conference member institution and entering their final semester as an undergraduate.  The students must be of an underrepresented population including women, minority groups, disabled students, and/or current and former military personnel.

"This is the fourth year we have offered the Sunbelt Rentals scholarship and we are thrilled for the deserving recipients," said Ken Rothmel, director of strategic accounts for Sunbelt Rentals.  "Ms. Finocchiaro and Ms. Spencer are impressive students with clear goals and aspirations.  We wish them great success in all their future endeavors and look forward to continuing to provide this opportunity to students attending Big South institutions."

"The Sunbelt Scholarship was the kind of thing that took me by surprise," stated Finocchiaro.  "I am so thankful that a company was willing to invest in a young person's education.  I am additionally thankful that I was one of those young people.  More than anything this scholarship gave me the peace of mind to finish my undergraduate career with one less worry and that my accomplishments thus far are worth something of value."

A committee of Big South Conference administrators, Sunbelt Rentals executives and institutional representatives from Big South Conference institutions selected the recipients of the Sunbelt Rentals scholarships.
