Boiling Springs, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men’s soccer team battled the Campbell Fighting Camels to a 1-1 tie after 110 minutes on Saturday night at Varsity Field. The match went two extra periods with neither team being able to capture the game-winning goal.
The tie moves Gardner-Webb to 4-6-3 overall and 3-1-1 in Atlantic Sun conference play.
The Bulldogs found themselves down early, when the Camels took a 1-0 at the 8:47 minute mark. Campbell’s Jairo Zambrana took a free kick from the right side, putting the ball into the box where teammate Josh Elliot found the pass, puttin a header through the GWU defense and past goalkeeper Tyler Kettering for the first goal of the game.
The ‘Dogs could not seem to find the back of the net in the first half, as they took seven shots, putting two on frame.
With the ‘Dogs still down 1-0 with time winding down in the second half, sophomore and team captain Dirk Dittrich gave the ‘Dogs new life. At the 75:05 mark, freshman Boris Gatzky took a corner kick, placing the ball into the box where a GWU player got a foot on the ball sending it crashing into a Campbell defender. Dittrich then took the deflected ball and put a shot into the back of the net past Campbell’s keeper Bryce Kenny, knotting the score up at 1-1.
Both teams tried hard for the remainder of the period, but coming up short with both offenses unable to put the ball past the goalline, sending the game into extra frames.
The overtime periods saw a combined total of six shots, with Campbell outshooting the ‘Dogs 5-1 in the final 20 minutes. However, Kettering held strong in the net for the Bulldogs stopping three shots in the extra periods.
For the match Kettering notched five saves, the same amount as Campbell’s keeper Bryce Kenny.
The Bulldogs will be back in action next week, as the will travel to Nashville, Tennessee to take on A-Sun opponenets Lipscomb and Belmont. The ‘Dogs will take on Lipscomb on Thursday, October 19, at 7 p.m. central time. Setzer’s squad will then stay in Nashville to wrap up their conference play with Belmont on Saturday, October 21, at 2 p.m. central.
