Boiling Springs, N.C. – Gardner-Webb (24-3, 13-1 Big South) made history in its last victory back on Monday night and will look to continue to add wins to its already record setting season this Saturday afternoon, as the Lady Bulldogs will host the Buccaneers of Charleston Southern at 3 p.m. It is Senior Day for the women’s basketball team, as prior to the tip-off, Gardner-Webb will recognize its three seniors – Meranda Burnett, Sherika McLean and Margaret Roundtree. Charleston Southern (15-11, 7-6 Big South) is coming off a tough loss at Liberty, which snapped its four-game winning streak.
Saturday afternoon is Senior Day, as a trio of seniors in Meranda Burnett, Sherika McLean and Margaret Roundtree will be recognized prior to their final home game in a GWU uniform.
The Gardner-Webb women’s basketball program is on the verge of reaching a huge milestone, as in its 35th season the Lady Bulldogs now sit at 399 wins. With its next win, GWU will reach 400 wins in the program’s history.
Gardner-Webb is on a current 12-game winning streak, with all 12 wins coming in conference play. The current winning streak is the longest winning streak of its NCAA Division I history.
With the Lady Bulldogs 59-56 win over Liberty in Lynchburg, Va. back on February 8, Gardner-Webb took sole possession of first-place in the Big South regular season standings. GWU is now 13-1 in conference play, a game and a half ahead of Liberty who is in second-place overall with a 10-2 conference record.
Coach Rick Reeves enters Saturday afternoon’s contest with 91 wins during his time as the head coach of the Gardner-Webb women’s basketball program. More importantly, Coach Reeves is only six back of former GWU head coach Eddie McCurley who has the most wins of any GWU coach in the program’s women’s basketball history with 97.
Gardner-Webb has four players averaging double-digit points thus far this season in Margaret Roundtree (12.3 ppg), Courtney Epps (12.1 ppg), Dominique Hudson (10.9 ppg) and Monique Hudson (10.6 ppg). Redshirt-junior center Sandra Vaitkute is sitting close to the double-digit mark, as she is averaging 8.8 ppg.
Charleston Southern has been on a role as of late, as the Buccaneers are 7-3 over its last 10 contests. CSU has moved into second in the conference in scoring offense, as the Buccaneers are averaging 68.4 points per game, on a League high 8.9 three-pointers made per contest. The Buccaneers are shooting 31.7 percent from downtown this season and 38.7 percent overall on the year. However, on the boards, CSU is being outrebounded by 2.1 rebounds per game and only average 1.7 blocks per game. Sharp shooters Katie Tull and Kelsey Wasmer are leading the Buccaneers in scoring, as Tull is averaging 15.4 points per game, while Wasmer is pouring in 13.1 points per game. The duo has combined to make 146 three-pointers thus far this season, as both are shooting over 34 percent from behind the three-point line.
Earlier this year, the top two offenses in the Big South struggled offensively, as GWU held CSU to under 20 percent shooting for the game and defeated the Buccaneers 58-45 in Charleston, S.C. Gardner-Webb and Charleston Southern share history, as the Lady Bulldogs first ever Big South Conference win came over the Lady Buccaneers last season, a 60-50 win at home on January 17. GWU holds a slight advantage in the overall series at 2-1.
