BOILING SPRINGS - CollegeSportsMadness.com named Gardner-Webb quarterback Lucas Beatty as its Big South Conference Offensive Player of the Week after his career day against Samford.
Beatty (Charlotte, N.C. / Olympic HS) completed 30-of-43 passes for 320 yards – all career-high numbers – helping power Gardner-Webb's offense to season bests in total yardage (442), points (23) and first downs (27).
The 6-foot-2, 220-pound redshirt sophomore made several clutch throws, including a sizzling performance on Gardner-Webb's final scoring drive of the game. With his team trailing 35-17, Beatty took over at his own 16-yard line with just over than 11 minutes left in the game – and connected on eight consecutive passes to drive the Runnin' Bulldogs all the way down to the Samford three.
Kenny Little punched in from there, pulling GWU within two scores with six minutes remaining.
Beatty has passed for 666 yards so far in 2012, surpassing his 2011 season total in just three games.
Next up for Beatty and Gardner-Webb (0-3) is a road trip to face Pittsburgh at 3:30 pm (ESPN3) on Saturday, September 22 at Heinz Field. The Panthers (1-2) knocked off No. 13 Virginia Tech on Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg.
