BOILING SPRINGS – Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Kenny Ray has accepted the NFL's Bill Walsh Minority Coaching Fellowship, and will spend part of training camp with the Detroit Lions this summer.

Ray, who is entering his first season with the Runnin' Bulldogs, will head to Lions camp in late July.

"I'm very excited for the opportunity to improve and learn from coaches at the highest level of the sport," said Ray. "This is an honor, and I look forward to bringing the lessons of this summer back to campus. You can never stop learning and developing in this profession, and our young men here at Gardner-Webb will benefit from this chance."

The Bill Walsh NFL Minority Coaching Fellowship is an annual program administered by the NFL Management Council and NFL Player Engagement. The program, designed as a vocational tool, provides talented minority coaches the opportunity to participate and gain valuable experience during NFL team's training camps, mini camps and offseason workouts.

Ray joined the Gardner-Webb program after spending the 2012 season as associate head coach and offensive line coach at North Greenville (S.C.) University. The native Alabaman played center on the college level at Southern Miss, where he was a teammate of future Hall of Famer Brett Favre.

Ray's first offensive line returns two starters from the 2012 season in tackle David McConnell (6-5, 306, RJr.) and guard Dylan Hopper (6-4, 301, So.) and another experienced starter in guard Jeff Harris (6-2, 292, RSr.). Harris started at right guard in 2011.

Tackles Matt McAlvin (6-5, 290, RSo.), David Sutton (6-3, 314, RFr.) and Jordan Stalker (6-5, 295, Fr.) and interior linemen Ashanti McPhee (6-3, 304, RSo.), Caleb Smith (6-3, 300, RFr.) and Dewayne Wray (6-0, 278, RFr.) will provide Gardner-Webb with plenty of size heading into the 2013 campaign.

McPhee (center) and McAlvin (tackle) worked with the returning starters on the first team during spring practice.

Gardner-Webb opens its 2013 season on August 31 at home against Furman. Kickoff is set for 6:00 pm in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium.
