Davidson, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb wrestling team posted a 1-0-1 record on Saturday
afternoon, battling Franklin & Marshall to a 20-20 tie and then bouncing
back from a 17-0 deficit to defeat Davidson 31-23 on Saturday afternoon.
In the Bulldogs first dual
match of the day, Gardner-Webb picked up wins at 133, 149, 157, 184 and at the
heavyweight division, yet it wasn't enough battling to an even 20-20 match
score.
GWU's first win came by way
of a forfeit at 133, giving the Bulldogs Brett Kostern the victory and putting
the Bulldogs up front early.
Yet redshirt-freshman Ryan
Medved got things started for the Bulldogs, picking up a 10-2 major decision
win over Eric Norgard at 149. Ryan's
twin brother, Alex Medved, followed is brother up with a 13-2 major decision
win over Matt Gittleman, giving GWU a slight lead.
After the Bulldogs dropped
back-to-back major decision losses at 165 and 174, GWU grappler Jonathan
Velazquez held off Matt Latessa of Franklin & Marshall for the 8-3 win.
A forfeit at 197, put the
Bulldogs behind heading into the final bout of the event.
In the heavyweight bout, GWU
redshirt-senior Dustin Porter edged out Colin Ely of Frankin & Marshall
with a 4-3 win, knotting the team score up at 20-20.
Gardner-Webb rebounded from
the 20-20 tie to come back from a 17-0 deficit to upend Davidson 31-23, the
Bulldogs first dual match victory of the season.
Again it was the Medved
brothers picking up back-to-back wins at 149 and 157 to get the Bulldogs on the
board. At 149, Ryan Medved picked up a
tech fall win defeating Carl Sandercock of Davidson 18-3. However, this time Alex Medved followed up
his brother with a 3:53 pin fall win over Joe McGinley at 157, putting the
Bulldogs back in the match with five bouts remaining.
The two teams then traded
forfeit victories at 165 and 174 to keep the match tight, yet in favor of the
Davidson Wildcats.
However, the Bulldogs took
the final three matches rather easily, as Blake Salyer and Jonathan Velazquez
each picked up major decision wins at 184 and 197, respectively, while Porter
put the match away for the 'Dogs win a pin fall win at 2:38 over Charlie Woff
in the heavyweight spot.
The Bulldogs improved to
1-6-1 after Saturday and will look to continue its recent dual match success as
GWU will take on both No. 15 Virginia Tech and UNC Greensboro tomorrow
afternoon in Blacksburg, VA.
