Draper Valley, Va. – Freshman Lauren Smith and junior Courtney Meyer both picked up top-10 finishes in the Draper Valley Intercollegiate tournament, as the Lady Bulldogs finished third overall with a two-round combined team score of 615, +39, in its 2009 fall opener.
The Lady Bulldogs turned in rounds of 311 and 304 to finish the two-day event with a score of 615, +39, 32 strokes out of first-place.
GWU newcomer Lauren Smith led the Lady Bulldogs, as she carded rounds of 74 and 73 to shoot a two-round combined score of 147, +3, to finish in fifth-place overall in her first ever collegiate tournament.
Junior Courtney Meyer, who was selected to the Big South All-Conference team last season, continued where she left off in the spring, shooting a low round 72 on Tuesday to finish in seventh-place overall with a total score of 150, +6.
Fellow returner Courtney Finocchiaro carded rounds of 82 and 77 to finish with a two-day score of 159, +15, to finish tied for 20th overall, while newcomer Chelcia Peterson shot a two-round combined score of 162, +18, to finish in 28th-place overall.
Freshman Hannah Hellyer rounded out the GWU golfers, as she carded a two-round combined score of 163, +19, to finish in a tie at 29th-place. Newcomer Meghan Allum also played, shooting a 161, +17, as an individual for the tournament.
Western Carolina won the event, as the Lady Catamounts posted rounds of 291 and 292 to finish the two-day tournament with a combined team score of 583, +7. Fellow Big South member Radford University took second-place, carding rounds of 299 and 298 to end with a team score of 597, +21, 18 strokes ahead of Gardner-Webb.
The Lady Bulldogs will return to the links on September 19-20, as Gardner-Webb will travel to Cullowhee, N.C. to compete in the Great Smokies Women’s Collegiate tournament hosted by Western Carolina.
