Boiling Springs, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb men’s soccer team showed no let down on Friday night after its big win over Clemson earlier in the week, as the Bulldogs had four different players score a goal in its 5-1 win over Covenant College on day one of the Soccer For A Cure Classic.
With the win, the Bulldogs move to 2-0 on the 2009 season.
Redshirt-senior Gerard Hefferon led the way for the Bulldogs, as the midfielder scored two goals on the night to help lead Gardner-Webb over the Scots of Covenant College.
Hefferon got the Bulldogs on the early in the first half, as in the seventh minute teammate Romeo Kabanda found an open Hefferon who received the pass, took one touch to the right and fired a shot right by the Covenant keeper John Eger to put the Bulldogs up 1-0.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Bulldogs picked up its second goal of the game as junior Adam Augruso picked up a rebounded shot in front of the goal and put the ball into the back of the net to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead only 16:11 into the contest.
GWU’s Hefferon picked up his second goal of the game in the 34th minute, as he again put a shot past the Covenant keeper to put the Bulldogs up 3-0.
In the second half, GWU continued its offensive attack as in the 56th minutes Kabanda, who had an assist earlier in the game, scored as he belted a shot that hit off a Covenant defender and ricocheted past the keeper and across the goal line, increasing the Bulldog lead to 4-0.
Less than three minutes later, fellow junior Eric Asanin-Miroux got in on the scoring act, as in the 59th minute he fired a shot that went off the keepers hands and into the goal, scoring his first goal on the season and giving the Bulldogs a decisive 5-0 lead.
Covenant College refused to quit however, as the Scots added a goal late in the 88th minute by way of Brian Stair to spoil the Gardner-Webb shutout attempt.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday, September 6, as Gardner-Webb will host Jacksonville University at 3:30 p.m. in the final game of the Soccer For A Cure Classic.
