Gardner-Webb Men’s Tennis Falls to UNC-Greensboro, 5-2, Saturday Evening

Senior Evgeny Slesarev defeated the #9 ITA Carolina Region singles player and reigning SoCon Player of the Year Orcun Seyrek in singles play Saturday evening against UNC-Greensboro.

GREENSBORO, NC- The Gardner-Webb men's tennis team fell to UNC-Greensboro by a 5-2 score Saturday evening at the Starmount Forest Country Club in Greensboro, NC.

 

Action kicked off with doubles play, with Gardner-Webb dropping all three matches to the Spartans to give up the doubles point.  The Bulldogs were able to win two of the six singles matches, yet UNCG's four singles wins were enough to give them the win.

 

In doubles play, the team of Arsel Kumdereli and Orcun Seyrek defeated the team of Evgeny Slesarev and Rafael Altmayer (8-6), and the team of Timion Meijs and William Jon defeated Adam Knutsson-Sunblad and Roman Piftor (8-4).  The final match of doubles play went into a tiebreaker with the team of Yaroslav Litus and Jacob Wright defeating the team of Andrew Veeder and Jeremie Tardif.

 

Gardner-Webb kicked off singles play with Slesarev defeating Seyrek, the reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year and #9 player in the ITA Carolina Region (1-6, 7-6(5), 1-0(7)) at the #1 position.  The Bulldogs picked up another victory at the #5 position when Piftor dropping John (6-4, 6-2), yet the Spartans took the other four singles matches to seal the victory.

 

The Bulldogs will return to action Monday afternoon as they travel to Spartanburg, SC to take on Spartanburg Methodist.  The match is set to begin at 3:00 PM.
