DELAND, Fla. – Senior Brittany Woods netted the first goal for the Gardner-Webb women’s soccer team while Angie Harvey netted the game-winning goal, enabling head coach Kevin Mounce’s squad to pick up its first road win of the season Thursday evening at Stetson, 2-1.
The Bulldogs improve to 4-6 overall and 2-1 in Atlantic Sun Conference competition. The Hatters fall to 2-7-1 on the year and 0-3 in league play.
Woods’ sparked an offense, which has struggled with finishing this season, with an early first-half score. The ball was a brilliant shot from the right side of the pitch, just over the outstretched arms of the Hatter goalkeeper, Andrea Garavaglia at the 23:09 mark. The goal was unassisted.
Just over three minutes later, GWU earned a direct kick, which Angie Harvey rocketed toward the goal. It glanced off a Stetson defender, but it would have gone in either way, thus crediting Harvey with a goal and giving the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage.
GWU would launch two more shots in the first stanza, but neither was on goal.
At the intermission, the Hatters held a 7-4 advantage in shots, but the Bulldogs had the lead where it counted – on the scoreboard.
Playing in its first home match in nearly a month, Stetson came out and controlled much of the second half, launching 12 shots to just three for the Bulldogs. Five of the Hatters shots were on goal while only one was for GWU. Stetson also forced four corner kicks while not allowing Mounce’s team to win any.
In the early portion of the final stanza, every opportunity that the Hatters had to score was snuffed out by junior two-sport student-athlete Sarah Wyszynski. Wyszynski posted four saves in the final 45 minutes of play, including one by Sarah Stock in the 81st minute. A year ago, Stock netted both goals in the 2-0 win over the Bulldogs, ending their season in the A-Sun semifinals.
GWU nearly completed the shutout bid, but Jennifer Hays found a ball that was deflected in the 84th minute and fired in home to pull the home squad within one at 2-1.
Hays launched a shot in the 87th minute that was just wide of the goal and Stock’s shot at the 89:01 mark was stopped by Wyszynski. The Hatters, down to the final few seconds of the match, were awarded a corner kick with 16 seconds remaining, but the GWU defense thwarted their effort, allowing the Bulldogs to come away with the critical A-Sun win.
For the night, Wyszynski amassed six saves while Garavaglia accounted for seven in the loss. GWU was out-shot 19-7 and Stetson held an 8-3 advantage for shots on goal.
The Bulldogs make the trek to A-Sun newcomer Florida Gulf Coast for a 2 p.m. match-up on Saturday, Oct. 6. |
