Charlotte, N.C. - The Gardner-Webb women's basketball team had four student-athletes receive Big South All-Conference recognition announced by the League office on Thursday night, March 10th, as Dominique Hudson, Monique Hudson, Catrina Green and Brianna Dillard all received postseason honors.
Senior point guard Dominique Hudson was named as a Big South First-Team All-Conference selection for the second straight season, as the 5-6 guard led the conference in both assists with 167, an average of 5.8 per game, and assist/turnover ratio at 1.6 on the season. Dominique was second on the team and tied for eighth in the League in scoring with 12.4 points per game, was tops on the team and second in the conference in free throw percentage at 74.5 percent, and was second on both the team and in the Big South in steals with 76, an average of 2.6 per game.
Dominique, who is Gardner-Webb's Division I career assists leader with 552, posted a new GWU DI single-season record with 167 assists this season, surpassing her old record of 155 set one year ago. Dominique, who scored her 1,000th career point back in November to become only the 15th-player in GWU's women's basketball history to join the 1,000 careers point club, is currently tied for sixth on GWU's all-time scoring list with 1,337 points, also tying her with Margaret Roundtree as GWU's Division I all-time scoring leader.
Fellow senior guard Monique Hudson was named to the Big South All-Conference Second-Team, earning her first postseason conference honor since being named the 2007-08 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year. Monique led the Runnin' Bulldogs and the Big South Conference all season long in steals, posting 81 thefts on the year for an average of 2.7 per game, and was second on the team and in the League with 113 assists, an average of 3.8 per contest. Monique was first on the team and sixth in the Big South in scoring with 13.3 points per game and was third in the League with a 1.0 assist/turnover ratio. Monique was fifth in the conference in free throw percentage, shooting 70.8 percent, 12th in the Big South in field goal percentage at 38.6 percent and 10th in the League in three-pointers made with an average of 1.4 per contest.
Monique, who scored a career-high 26 points in the home win over High Point on February 21st, tallied her 1000th career point on February 14th at UNCA becoming only the 16th-player in GWU women's basketball history to join the 1,000 career points club. Monique currently sits in 15th-place overall on the GWU all-time career-scoring list with 1,082 career points.
Gardner-Webb's Green earned a spot on the Big South All-Freshman Team, as the center from Greensboro, N.C. played in 29 games, starting 16 on the season and filling in admirably with the injury to redshirt-senior Sandra Vaitkute midway through the year. Green, who shot a team-high 53.7 percent from field on the season, averaged 5.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in her first season at GWU. Green, who finished eighth overall in the conference in blocked shots with 28, an average of 1.0 per game, posted a career-high 15 points at home versus Liberty on January 31st. Green, who hauled in a career-high 11 rebounds against No. 10 North Carolina, posted a double-double in her first career Big South game, scoring 13 points and posting 11 rebounds in the win. Green posted seven points and seven rebounds against Purdue and hauled down a team-high six rebounds in the loss at No. 10 Oklahoma.
Dillard was named to the Big South Academic All-Conference team, as the sophomore has posted a 3.97 grade point average toward her degree in Psychology. Dillard, who has played in all 30 games for GWU on the season, starting 27 of them, averaged 5.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game in the regular season for the Runnin' Bulldogs. Dillard posted a career-high 19 points in the loss at No. 10 Oklahoma and tallied a career-high 10 rebounds in the home win over High Point. Dillard is third on the team in assists with 48 and is fourth on the team in steals with 39.
Gardner-Webb, who is the No. 3 seed in this weekend's 2011 Advance Auto Parts Big South Women's Basketball Championship tournament, will take on the No. 6 seeded Asheville Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. on Friday night, March 11th, in the first round of the tournament at the Millis Center in High Point, N.C.
