ASHBURN, Va. - Former Gardner-Webb offensive guard Corey O'Daniel began his professional football journey Friday morning, hitting the practice fields with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted rookie free agent.
O'Daniel (6-6, 307) was added to the Redskins camp roster Friday according to the Washington Post (washingtonpost.com).
The Louisville, Ky., native is the 11th Gardner-Webb product to sign or be drafted by an NFL club since 1973, and is the third in the past four years - joining former teammates Brian Johnston (2008, Kansas City, 7th round) and Dobson Collins (2009, San Francisco, FA).
O'Daniel was a four-year starter for the Runnin' Bulldogs, earning All-Big South Conference honors in 2008, 2009 and 2010. He was a preseason Division I FCS All-America selection by the Sports Network and Phil Steele's College Football Preview Magazine prior to the 2010 season.
O'Daniel started all 44 games of his career at Gardner-Webb, seeing action mainly at guard - but also showing enough athleticism to play left tackle at times. He covered 40 yards in a quick, 5.0 seconds during testing prior to his senior season.
Before enrolling at Gardner-Webb, O'Daniel was an Associated Press All-State selection at St. Xavier (Ky.) High. He was selected to play in the annual Kentucky-Tennessee All-Star game following his senior prep season.
