CHICAGO, Ill. – Gardner-Webb linebacker Marty Patterson and long snapper Hudson Smith were each named to the College Sporting News Division I FCS Preseason All-America Third Team Wednesday.

Patterson (Mt. Airy, Ga. / Habersham Central HS) is a preseason All-America choice for the second season in a row and heads into the 2011 campaign at full strength after redshirting in 2010. The 6-foot-3, 235-pounder led the Big South Conference with 110 tackles in 2009, earning All-Big South honors for the second-straight season.

Patterson was named to the Big South’s preseason All-Conference team last week in a vote of the league’s head coaches and select media members.

Smith (Aiken, S.C. / Aiken HS) was honored by CSN at long snapper, but has emerged as a much more versatile threat for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. The 6-foot-1, 230-pound sophomore was a second-team All-Big South selection at long snapper in 2010 and is a preseason All-Big South choice at the position in 2011.

Smith started games on both sides of the football for Gardner-Webb in 2010, seeing action at his regular defensive end position – but also starting at No. 16 Liberty at running back due to injuries at that position on November 6. Smith finished the season with 23 total tackles, 4.0 tackles for loss and a half sack on defense, and carried 11 times for 35 yards on offense. His long snapping helped punter Graham Purvis rank at the top of the league in punting average.

Since 2003, Gardner-Webb has seen 18 players earn preseason FCS / I-AA All-America honors from various publications and organizations – including four (Patterson, Smith, James Perry III and Jamie Dunaway) in 2011.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs report for preseason camp on Thursday, August 4 and will hold their first practice on Saturday.

GWU opens the regular season on Saturday, September 3, at 6:00 pm against Brevard (N.C.) College in Spangler Stadium.
