Davidson, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs' women's tennis team dropped its season-opener on Saturday, giving up a 5-2 decision at the hands of the Davidson Wildcats.
GWU got a win at #1 singles from junior Erica White. White (Charleston, WV) pulled away in straight sets to prevail 6-4, 6-0. White picked up another win in doubles play alongside senior Ronia Hutterli (Dubendorf, Switzerland). The duo knocked off Davidson's duo of Catherine Wood and Elise Held by a count of 8-5.
Freshman Alice Hopkins (Birmingham, England) had an impressive debut in her first singles match as a Runnin' Bulldog, pulling away to score a win at #3 by a margin of 6-1, 6-2. Fellow freshman Yasmin Doost lost a hard-fought match at #5, being outlasted by the Wildcat's Wood 4-6, 7-6, 10-8.
Jenny Lunde battled at #4 singles, but was unable to come away with a victory and fell to Davidson's Katherine Dicconson 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.
Gardner-Webb will hit the courts again this Thursday, staying on the road to take on Erskine College. The February 9 match is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
