Due West, S.C. - Gardner-Webb's women's tennis team used wins in five of six singles matches to knock off host Erskine College by a score of 7-2 on Thursday.
With the win, GWU improves to 1-1 early in the 2012 season.
The Runnin' Bulldogs got off on the right foot early in the match, winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the early lead. The tandem of Erica White and Tavenner Black scored an 8-2 triumph at #3 doubles over the Flying Fleet's Abby O'Reilly/April Horne. GWU's Jenny Lunde teamed with Ioana Oprea to knock off Corin Hallman/Victoria Stephens of Erskine, winning 8-5 at #2 doubles.
Freshman Alice Hopkins picked up her second singles win as a Runnin' Bulldog, cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Tessa Rheault at the #2 position. Hopkins' performance improves her season singles record to 2-0.
At #3, senior Ioana Oprea secured a 6-2, 6-1 win over O'Reilly. GWU won at #4 singles as well, as Lunde finished off Erskine's Mika Goyette 6-1, 6-3.
Freshman Yasmin Doost defeated Nikki Miller in straight sets at the #6 spot, winning a 6-4, 6-1 decision.
White wrapped up the scoring at #1 singles, battling for a comeback win over Hallman 3-6, 6-2, 10-6.
Gardner-Webb will be back on the courts this Saturday as the Runnin' Bullodgs travel to face Elon. The match is scheduled for 2 pm.
