Chapel Hill, N.C. - Gardner-Webb got singles match victories from Ioana Oprea and Erica White, but saw Elon take the match by a score of 5-2 Saturday in match played at UNC's indoor tennis complex.
With the loss, Gardner-Webb drops to 1-2 on the year.
Elon opened the match by sweeping the three doubles positions. The Runnin' Bulldogs dropped the first two singles matches as the Phoenix would take control of the match early.
Gardner-Webb got a win at the #1 position from White (Charleston, W.V.). White dropped the Phoenix's Jordan Johnston 6-3, 6-2 to get the win.
Elon would win the next two matches to clinch the match. Freshman Alice Hopkins (Birmingham, England) lost a hard-fought match 1-6, 6-1, 10-2 to Elon's Bryn Khoury.
Oprea (Bucharest, Romania) won her singles match, battling to a 6-1, 7-6 win to provide the match's final margin.
GWU will next hit the courts on Wednesday, staying on the road to take on Presbyterian in the Runnin' Bulldogs' Big South opener. The February 15 match is slated to begin at 2:00 pm.
