Clinton, S.C. - Gardner-Webb women's tennis got its first Big South win in its first try, defeating Presbyterian on the road Wednesday by a 5-2 margin.
The Runnin' Bulldogs improve to 2-2 this season and 1-0 in Big South competition.
GWU opened the match with a sweep of the three doubles matches to claim the point. The duo of Erica White/Ronia Hutterli knocked off Presbyterian's Carolin DeLoach/Lindsay Krause 8-3 at #3 doubles. Alice Hopkins and Yasmin Doost clinched to point at #2, winning 8-4 over Patricia Alves/Cara Caruso.
Ioana Oprea and Jenny Lunde teamed to win at #1 doubles, earning an 8-5 triumph over Paige Oelke/Greer Ransom.
After the Blue Hose pulled even with a win at #5 singles, Oprea (Bucharest, Romania) grabbed a 6-1, 6-0 win over Caruso to put the Runnin' Bulldogs back on top for good.
Hopkins (Birmingham, England) pulled away from Ransom to earn a 6-4, 6-1 win at the #2 spot. White (Charleston, WV) followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Oelke. Together, White and Hopkins have combined to post a formidable 7-1 record at the #1 and #2 singles positions this season.
With the match in hand, Doost (Bray, Maidenhead, England) grinded out the win at #6, outlasting Presbyterian's Lucia Leahy 7-5, 7-5.
The Gardner-Webb women will be back in action on Saturday as they host East Carolina. The match vs. the Pirates is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. start time.
