Boiling Springs, N.C. - Freshman Alice Hopkins clinched the match with a win at #2 singles to propel Gardner-Webb to a 4-3 win over East Carolina at home on Saturday.
With the win, the Runnin' Bulldogs improve to 3-2 early in the 2012 season.
Gardner-Webb opened the match by winning two of three in doubles to claim the point. At the #1 position, Ioana Oprea and Jenny Lunde teamed up to defeat ECU's Yilan Zhang/Danielle Terpko 8-3. Hopkins and Yasmin Doost played to a win at #2 doubles to seal the point for the Runnin' Bulldos, winning 8-4 over the Pirates' Natalie Collins/Renata Bakieva.
In addition to Hopkins' 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win at #2, GWU got singles wins at the #3 and #1 positions. Oprea won 6-0, 6-0 over Neena Wanko in the #3 hole to help GWU set an early lead.
Erica White triumphed at #1 singles over Zhang, taking a 6-3, 6-3 decision. The junior from Charleston, W.V. is a perfect 5-0 in #1 singles play thus far this season.
Gardner-Webb returns to action next Wednesday, traveling to take on UNC-Greensboro. The Feb. 21 match is scheduled for a 2:00 pm start time.
