Boiling Springs, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs fought to the end, but ultimately lost in heartbreaking fashion by a score of 4-3 to visiting Radford Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, GWU drops to 3-4 on the season.
Radford gained control of the match early, taking doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The freshman duo of Alice Hopkins/Yasmin Doost stayed hot, earning their second consecutive win at the No. 2 doubles position. The pair won 8-6 over the Highlanders' Mia Drobnjak/Taylor Newman.
Reigning Big South Player of the Week Erica White (Charleston, W.V.) took the win at the No. 1 slot for the Runnin' Bulldogs, pulling away from Hannah Crawford to prevail 7-5, 6-1. White has posted a record of 6-1 thus far in singles competition on the season.
Hopkins (Birmingham, England) won at No. 2 to keep the Runnin' Bulldogs in the match. The reigning Big South Freshman of the Week improved to 2-0 on the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Petra Dajevic.
Senior Ioana Oprea (Bucharest, Romania) added a 6-1, 6-3 win for GWU at the No. 3 spot, defeating Drobnjak. Junior Ronia Hutterli (Duebendorf, Switzerland) battled back from an early deficit to force a third set at No. 5, but lost a grueling match at the hands of Newman by a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 margin.
GWU hits the courts again this Wednesday when the Runnin' Bulldogs host North Carolina A&T. The February 29 match is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start time.
