Hilton Head, S.C. - Gardner-Webb women's tennis defeated both its opponents at the USPTR Spring Tennisfest on Monday, sweeping Siena and Savannah State 7-0 for its 4th and 5th straight wins.

GWU (8-4, 2-1 Big South) opened the day with a 7-0 win over Siena College, sweeping all matches to take the win. The Runnin' Bulldogs claimed the doubles points with wins at all three positions, led by an 8-1 win at No. 1 from Ioana Oprea/Jenny Lunde, who defeated the Saints' Jasleen Sandhu/Carly Holloway. The GWU tandem of Alice Hopkins/Yasmin Doost knocked off Siena's Jessica Macaluso/Cassandra Braz by a score of 8-2 to take the win at No. 2 doubles.

At No. 3, GWU's Erica White/Ronia Hutterli earned an 8-3 triumph over Nicole Ross/Brittany Filip to complete the doubles sweep.

Gardner-Webb was able to carry the momentum into singles play, taking wins at all six positions. GWU got 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 3 and No. 4 singles from Oprea (Bucharest, Romania) and Lunde (Hoevik, Norway), defeating Filip and Danielle Crill respectively.

Hopkins, a freshman from Birmingham, England, took the win at No. 2, defeating Holloway 6-1, 6-0. Hutterli (Duebendorf, Switzerland) cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5 for the Runnin' Bulldogs.

At No. 1, White (Charleston, W.V.), beat Sandhu by a 6-2, 6-2 margin, and Doost (Bray, England) won 6-3, 6-1 over Braz at the No. 6 position to complete the Runnin' Bulldog sweep.

Also competing for the Runnin' Bulldogs was senior Tavenner Black (Gainesville, Fla.), who prevailed 8-0 over the Saints' Jennifer Galante in exhibition play.

Gardner-Webb stayed hot in its second match of the day, again sweeping its opponent in defeating Savannah State 7-0.

GWU opened the match with wins at all three doubles slots. At No. 3, White/Hutterli defeated the Tigers' duo of Ge'Andre Hilton/Davita Washington by an 8-0 margin. Oprea/Lunde won 8-1 over Savannah State's Esmira Gheissary/Chandel McDonie at No. 1 doubles, and Hopkins/Doost took the win at the No. 2 position, besting the tandem of Sandra Kristajansdottir/Nicole Ashiedu 8-1.

The Runnin' Bulldogs continued its winning run in singles play, taking all six singles wins. Oprea won her 9th singles match of the season, taking a 6-0, 6-0 win over Ashiedu at No. 3 singles. Also taking 6-0, 6-0 wins for Gardner-Webb, at No. 5 and 6 respectively, were Doost and Black.

At the No. 2 singles slot, Hopkins improved to 11-1 on the year in singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Gheisery. White likewise improved to 11-1 in 2012, taking the win at No. 1 by besting the Lady Tigers' Kristjansdottir 6-2, 6-1.

Lunde, 7-5 this season as a staple at the No. 5 singles position for Coach Corn's squad, earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over McDonie.

Gardner-Webb finishes its Spring Tennisfest competition period tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. when the Runnin' Bulldogs take on the University of Buffalo (SUNY).
