Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb won 3 of 6 singles matches at home Saturday, but was unable to overcome a 1-0 doubles deficit and saw visiting Coastal Carolina escape with a 4-3 win.
GWU (8-5, 1-2) found itself down 1-0 early in the match after Coastal grabbed wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles positions. Erica White and Ronia Hutterli teamed up to post a doubles win at the No. 3 slot, defeating the Chanticleer tandem Kourtney Kowal/Maria Hesketh by an 8-6 margin.
In singles play, Gardner-Webb got wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5. Freshman Alice Hopkins (Birmingham, England) got the Runnin' Bulldogs on the board with a 6-4, 6-3 win over the Chanticleers' Diana Mortlock at No. 2, her 12th singles win of the season. The junior Hutterli (Duebendorf, Switzerland) continued the GWU rally with a win at the No. 5 spot, besting Kowal by a score of 6-4, 6-4.
At No. 3, senior Ioana Oprea (Bucharest, Romania) outlasted Coastal's Mikaela Kristofersson to take the win, taking the decision by a count of 6-4, 7-5. The win marked the 9th for Oprea on the year.
Gardner-Webb returns to action this coming Monday for a home match versus North Carolina A&T. The match is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start time.
