Boiling Springs, N.C. - GWU fell to Big South frontrunner Winthrop Wednesday afternoon, dropping a 6-1 decision at home to the visiting Eagles.
With the loss, Gardner-Webb moves to 9-7 (1-3) on the season.
After dropping the No. 1 doubles match, Gardner-Webb responded with a win at the No. 3 spot, as Erica White and Ronia Hutterli prevailed by a margin of 8-5. Winthrop took the win at No. 2 doubles to go on top 1-0.
GWU's lone singles win came from senior Ioana Oprea (Bucharest, Romania), who picked up her sixth straight singles victory with the win Wednesday. Oprea, whose 13-3 singles record is second best for the Runnin' Bulldogs this season, took a 6-4, 6-2 win over the Eagles' Sandra Herrera at No. 3 to give GWU the point.
Winthrop took straight set wins at the other five singles spots on Wednesday.
Gardner-Webb returns to action with another Big South tilt, taking on Charleston Southern Saturday. The March 24 match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
