Boiling Springs, N.C. - Freshman Alice Hopkins earned her 15th singles win of the season, but it was not enough as visiting Charleston Southern took a 5-2 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs on Saturday.
Hopkins, a Birmingham, England native, improved to 15-2 on the season with a win at No. 2 singles, besting the Bucs' Angelica Sidorenko for a 6-0, 6-2 triumph. The freshman has posted a 14-2 mark at the No. 2 singles position this season for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Charleston Southern (10-3, 3-1) was able to jump on top with wins at all three doubles positions, taking an early 1-0 lead.
Gardner-Webb (9-8, 1-4) responded with Hopkins' quick win at No. 2 singles to keep the pressure on the visitors. Charleston Southern, however, got wins at No.'s 6 and 1 singles from Olga Makhova and Alia Nour respectively to push GWU to the brink.
The Buccaneers picked up wins at the No. 4 and No. 3 positions to seal the match.
Junior Ronia Hutterli (Duebendorf, Switzerland) grinded out a 6-4, 6-4 win at the No. 5 singles spot, outlasting CSU's Alexandra Walters for the victory.
After posting a five match win streak at the beginning of the month, Gardner-Webb is 1-4 in its last five contests.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will look to return to its winning ways Tuesday on the road against Campbell. The Big South tilt is scheduled for a 2:00 p.m. start time.
