Gardner-Webb (11-8, 3-4) took a 1-0 lead early in the match, sweeping the doubles positions to foster early momentum. Erica White and Ronia Hutterli earned an 8-0 win at No. 3 over the Catamount tandem Sarah Walters/Taylor Casey, and Alice Hopkins teamed with Yasmin Doost to take an 8-1 win over Karen Jimenez/Katie Berry at the No. 2 position. The Runnin' Bulldog duo of Ioana Oprea/Jenny Lunde tacked on an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, outlasting Western Carolina's Ainhoa Iglesias Diaz/Megan McLinden.
The Runnin' Bulldogs carried the momentum over to singles, where they earned victories at each position. Senior Tavenner Black (Gainesville, Fla.) took a 6-0, 6-0 triumph over Casey at No. 5 singles, earning her third win of the season in giving Gardner-Webb the point.
Lunde (Hoevik, Norway) picked up her ninth singles win of the year with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 spot, besting Walters to earn the win.
Gardner-Webb got strong play, as it has all season, from its No. 1, 2, and 3 singles players, as White, Hopkins, and Oprea each recorded singles wins on Sunday. Oprea (Bucharest, Romania) posted a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 3 over Berry, Hopkins (Birmingham, England) beat McLinden at 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2, and White (Charleston, W.V.) cruised to a 6-2, 6-0 win against Iglesias at the No. 1 position.
White, Hopkins, and Oprea are a combined 46-11 at the top three singles positions this season.
Prior to the match, GWU's seniors Tavenner Black and Ioana Oprea were recognized for their contributions to the Gardner-Webb community both on the court and off.
Gardner-Webb turns around to play at Charlotte on Monday, scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start time.
