Charlotte, N.C. - The Big South Conference placed 1,547 out of 3,278 student-athletes - 47.19 percent - on its prestigious annual Presidential Honor Roll list for the 2011-12 academic season, it was announced today by Big South Conference Commissioner Kyle B. Kallander.

"The Big South Conference has always taken a lot of pride in the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes," said Kallander.  "To have nearly half of all student-athletes make the Presidential Honor Roll for the eighth consecutive year is a reflection of the outstanding individuals in the Conference and their priorities.  We are all extremely proud of the achievements of these fine young men and women."

Gardner-Webb University had 56.47 percent of its 317 student-athletes among the honorees, as 179 total student-athletes earned a spot on the conference honor roll.

The Runnin' Bulldogs were one of sixth full-time Big South Conference members to have at least 50 percent of its student-athletes receive the honor.

The 179 student-athletes is eight more than 2010-11's total of 171 student-athletes, as the number of representatives of the Runnin' Bulldogs on the Presidential Honor Roll continues to increase each season.

Overall the Runnin' Bulldogs had nine programs with at least 60 percent or more of their student-athletes reach the honor roll with the men's golf team leading the way at 90 percent.

The men's tennis team had 88.9 percent of their student-athletes named to the honor roll, while women's golf (87.5 percent), volleyball (76.9 percent) and women's tennis (71.4 percent) followed close behind.

To be named to the Presidential Honor Roll, student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or better for the recently completed academic year.  The 47.19 percentage marks the highest percentage since 2003 and is the eighth-straight year above the 40 percent threshold, as well as the seventh consecutive year-to-year improvement.  It is also the third year-in-a row over 45 percent.

The school-by-school listing of the Big South's Presidential Honor Roll is attached to this release, while a sport-by-sport listing is available on the Conference's Website, www.BigSouthSports.com.
