Charlotte, N.C. - Sophomore Brendan Dempsey won twice individually in Flight 6, and picked up a doubles win on day one to lead Gardner-Webb's men's tennis team Friday-Sunday at the 49er Invitational in the Runnin' Bulldogs first competition of Fall 2012.
Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland) swept Winthrop's Chase Altieri on Friday, winning 6-0, 6-0 to take an opening day win in Flight 6. On Saturday, Dempsey knocked off College of Charleston's Alon Faiman 6-4, 6-3 to earn his second straight set win of the weekend.
The sophomore swinger also teamed up with fellow sophomore Joao Poli to defeat the Winthrop tandem of Hirokawa/Altieri, winning by an 8-1 margin in Flight 3 doubles.
Sophomore Stephen Martin (Bray, Ireland) and freshman Johnathan Walker combined to record a Flight 4 doubles win over Linares/O'Brien 8-2. Each player picked up a singles win on day one as well, with Martin battling back to defeat Charlotte's Kwasniewicz 1-6, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (1) and Walker knocking off Winthrop's O'Brien 6-0, 6-1.
Senior Adam Knutsson-Sundblad (Gothenburg, Sweden) teamed up with freshman Nkita Zverkov for an opening day doubles win in Flight 2 over Chen/Patrick of Winthrop 8-2. The pair earned the Flight 2 win after day three was rained out.
Senior Matthew Parker (Marietta, Ga.) won on Friday too, outlasting Winthrop's Chen 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 for the three set win.
Due to inclement weather, Gardner-Webb did not complete any of its scheduled matches on Sunday.
GWU men's tennis returns to action Friday, Sep. 21 - Saturday, Sep. 22 to host the GWU Fall Classic in its second competition of the Fall season in 2012.
