CHARLOTTE - Linebacker Tanner Burch and punter Bo Lindsey each earned Big South Conference weekly football honors as selected by the league office.
Burch (Savannah, Ga. / Savannah Christian School) was named Defensive Player of the Week after another busy week at middle linebacker and Lindsey (Roebuck, S.C. / Dorman HS) was named Special Teams Player of the Week.
Burch posted a career-high 16 total tackles, broke up a pass and recovered a fumble in Saturday's loss to Samford, collecting eight tackles in each half of that game.
The 6-foot-3, 242-pound sophomore helped the GWU defense limit Samford to only 107 total offensive yards in the second half – and only one sustained scoring drive in the final 30 minutes.
Burch leads the Big South Conference with 41 total tackles through three games in 2012, and ranks No. 3 nationally in the Football Championship Subdivision with 13.6 tackles per game.
Lindsey had another solid day punting the football for Gardner-Webb, kicking six times for an average of 42.7 yards.
He pinned Samford inside its 20-yard line twice and had only two of his punts returned for positive yardage. He connected on long punts of 48 and 57 yards in the game.
Lindsey leads the Big South Conference in punting average this season, booting 20 kicks for an average of 43.2 yards. He has five punts already this season longer than 50 yards and has pinned opponents inside the 20 five times.
Gardner-Webb travels to Pittsburgh Saturday to take on a surging Panthers' squad at 3:30 pm at Heinz Field. The game will air on ESPN3 and WGWG-FM (88.3 / wgwg.org).
