Gardner-Webb's No. 3 doubles tandem of sophomore Joao Poli (Londrina, Brazil) and freshman Jonathan Walker (Elkin, N.C.). The pair twice scored wins over Appalachian State's Sansung/Lake 8-4 to seal the flight win.
The No. 1 doubles tandem of Ernest Alberch (Torello, Spain) and Matthew Parker (Marietta, Ga.) picked up a win over the Asheville No. 1 pair, Waissen/Langeard, 9-7.
Poli picked up two individual wins at the Saturday-Sunday Invitational, outlasting Asheville's Alex Crocker 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 as well McKinnon of Appalachian State (6-2, 6-4).
Alberch won twice at No. 4, defeating John Schubel (Asheville) 6-3, 6-2 and Graham Duncan (Wofford) 6-1, 6-2 in a solid showing in Flight 4 singles.
Sophomore Brendan Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland) battled back to knock off eventual flight champion Walker Heffron (Wofford) 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, and defeated Asheville's Ryan Matthews 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles.
Parker also won twice in his singles outing, triumphing in matches versus Pete Conalty (6-4, 6-1) of Asheville and Sansing of Appalachian State (7-5, 6-3) to add to an impressive weekend on the courts for Gardner-Webb men's tennis.
"I really like our team and our chemistry," said head coach Mike Griffith. "We are a hard working team that competes very hard. I really believe these Fall tournaments predict so much how the Spring will turn out and we are so much further along this Fall than we were last year. We have been so much more successful in terms of wins.
"I am really looking forward toward January to see how we do."
Gardner-Webb men's tennis wraps up its Fall 2012 season at the Winthrop Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C.. The three-day tournament takes place Friday, November 2 - Sunday, November 4.
