In Flight 1 singles, senior Erica White (Charleston, W.V.) won two matches. White knocked off UNC Asheville's Zoe Hamel 6-3, 6-2, as well as Western Carolina's Stacia Kissell 6-3, 6-2, before dropping a hard-fought 7-6 (11), 2-6, (10-2) decision against USC Upstate's Cinstansze Kuerten.
Junior Jenny Lunde (Hoevik, Norway) picked up two wins in Flight 2 singles, another solid showing in singles play for GWU. Lunde outlasted UNC Asheville's Emily McNail 7-5, 6-4, and Western Carolina's Nicole Nielly 6-7 (3), 7-5, (10-2), but fell to USC Upstate's Isabel Von Stryk 6-1, 6-2.
Senior Ronia Hutterli (Duebendorf, Switzerland) overcame a one set deficit to come back for a Flight 3 singles win over UNC Asheville's Amryn Soldier, winning by a score of 2-6, 6-2, (10-4). Hutterli dropped her last match of the weekend, a tough 6-3, 5-7, (10-2) decision against Western Carolina's Shannon Bettiol.
In Flight 4, sophomore Yasmin Doost (Bray, England) battled for two tough singles wins. After dropping a 6-4, 6-2 decision against UNC Asheville's 6-4, 6-2, Doost pulled away from Erin McGuire of Western Carolina 2-6, 7-6 (3), (10-2), and was able to hold on for a 7-5, 3-6, (10-7) against USC Upstate's Julie Bell.
Gardner-Webb also had success in doubles play at its Fall Tournament, getting two Flight 1 wins from the duo of White/Hutterli. They defeated Western Carolina's Kissel/Ruiz, as well as UNC Asheville's Hamel/Soldier by 8-2 margins, but dropped an 8-5 match versus USC Upstate's Kuerten/Cohen.
The Runnin' Bulldogs also picked up two doubles wins in Flight 2, coming from the Lunde/Doost pairing. The junior/sophomore combo knocked off UNC Asheville's Boissevain/McNall 8-5, and bounced back after a 9-7 loss to WCU's Bettiol/Nielly for an 8-6 victory over USC Upstate's Bell/Vandeberg.
Gardner-Webb's women's tennis team is off until its 2013 Spring slate of matches, the first scheduled for early February against Elon.
