Newsome (6-3, 200, RSr.) started the season's first three games, but played just two minutes in Wednesday night's 66-62 loss to Lipscomb. Gardner-Webb (1-2) was already playing without starting center Mike Byron, who is expected to miss 3-4 weeks.
"Our job is to control what we can control, and we need to respond to this adversity with that approach," said Gardner-Webb head coach Chris Holtmann.
Newsome averaged 12.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game for the Runnin' Bulldogs last season, and was named preseason second-team All-Big South Conference heading into his final season on the hardwood.
He averaged 8.5 points and 7.0 rebounds through the first two games this season.
Following its Thursday night tilt at DePaul, Gardner-Webb will stay in the midwest to take on Iowa at 8:00 Saturday night. The Runnin' Bulldogs will then fly to Cancun to battle Howard (11/20) and either Austin Peay or Western Carolina (11/21), before returning to the midwest to play at Illinois (11/25).
