BOILING SPRINGS – Gardner-Webb will return to Paul Porter Arena for the first time in nearly three weeks Monday night, hosting a strong UVA-Wise program at 7:00 pm.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs (4-4) haven’t seen the court since nearly knocking off undefeated Illinois on Sunday, November 25, in Champaign – falling 63-62 to a Fighting Illini squad that jumped into the national top-25 in both major polls at No. 22 one day later.

UVA-Wise (4-5) dropped a game to Shawnee (Ohio) State on Saturday night at home, 76-68, capping a very busy week for Cavaliers that included a win over Rio Grande and a loss to Division II power Bellarmine.

The Cavaliers play in the the strongest NAIA league in the nation, already playing nationally-ranked squads from Lindsey Wilson and Pikeville this season.

UVA-Wise is paced by guard Javon Moore (16.9 ppg) and forward Matt Day (12.8 ppg) and have three other players averaging better than 8.0 ppg heading into Monday night’s game against Gardner-Webb. The Cavaliers also have solid size, with 7-foot freshman center Pape Mor Sall the biggest man on the roster.

Gardner-Webb has been strong in its last five games, winning three times and holding second-half leads at both Iowa and Illinois before falling in tight contests. Donta Harper averaged 18.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game in last week’s three-game surge, earning MVP honors at the Cancun Challenge and posting a team-high 16 points in the near upset at Illinois.

Harper (13.6 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and sharpshooter Max Landis (13.1 ppg) pace the Runnin’ Bulldogs offensively, with Kevin Hartley (7.4 ppg, 6.6 rpg) also putting up solid numbers up front.

GWU has been particularly salty on the defensive end, limiting teams to just 59.1 points per game and a 40.7 percent shooting clip (27.5 percent from three-point range). Those numbers lead the Big South Conference heading into this week’s action.

Monday’s game marks the beginning of a busy, three-game week for the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Gardner-Webb will play at Southern Conference powerhouse Wofford on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm and will host OVC contender Tennessee Tech at 7:00 pm on Saturday, December 8.

All three games will air on WGWG-FM (88.3 / wgwg.org), with Fabian Fuentes – Voice of the Runnin’ Bulldogs – providing the call.
