CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BigSouthSports.com) - Gardner-Webb's men's and women's tennis teams have been slated to finish seventh and eighth respectively, following the release of the Big South Conference's preseason polls, the League announced today.
On the women's side, reigning team champion Winthrop was picked, using a combined tally of votes by representatives of all the conference's teams, to finish first once again in 2013 with a total of 99 out of 100 possible points. Charleston Southern (85), Coastal Carolina (78), Campbell (67), and Liberty (58) round out the top five of the women's poll.
Radford (52) was predicted to finish sixth, followed by GWU (50), UNC Asheville (27), Longwood (18), and Presbyterian (16).
Gardner-Webb's women's tennis team, which earned a fifth seed in last season's Big South Tournament, returns All-Conference singles performer Erica White (Charleston, W.Va.) as well as fellow senior Ronia Hutterli (Duebendorf, Switzerland), but must replace two of its top three singles performers behind White from last season's team.
For the men, the reigning champion was also picked atop the conference's preseason poll, as Radford earned 77 points in the voting. Campbell and Coastal Carolina (62) tied in the voting to finish behind Radford, and were followed by another tie between Liberty and Winthrop (46).
Presbyterian (45) and UNC Asheville (34) are slated to finish sixth and seventh in the poll, as GWU (20) and Big South newcomer Longwood (13) round out the voting in eighth and ninth place respectively.
Though the Runnin' Bulldog men finished in eighth place in the conference a season ago, GWU returns all but one of its top seven players from a young 2012 team and, with an influx of impact freshmen during the offseason, will look to make a splash in the Big South heading into 2013.
Gardner-Webb women's tennis opens its 2013 Spring regimen at home on February 4 at 2:00 p.m. against Elon. GWU's men's tennis squad opens this weekend at UNC (Saturday, 5:00 p.m.).
