Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's men's tennis team will hit the road for its 2013 season opener as the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to take on ACC powerhouse North Carolina on Saturday, January 19 in Chapel Hill, N.C.

GWU looks to carry the momentum of what head coach Mike Griffith sees as a tremendous opportunity heading into the upcoming 2013 season.

"Our team chemistry is as good as any team I have coached," said Griffith. "We have all the tools to be very successful."

Gardner-Webb returns six of its best seven players from last season, and, with the addition of newcomers Benjamin Kaszás, Nikita Zverkov, and Jonathan Walker, the Runnin' Bulldogs figure to have improved significantly.

Senior leadership for GWU will come from Adam Knutsson-Sundblad (Gothenburg, Sweden), Roman Piftor (Tashkent, Uzbekistan), and Matthew Parker (Marietta, Ga.). Knutsson-Sundblad and Piftor look to play major roles in singles play in 2013, and both Parker and Knutsson-Sundblad will figure into coach Griffith's doubles scheme this season.

With a year of experience under their collective belts, GWU's sophomore class will look to improve on its contributions from a season ago. Brendan Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland), Ernest Alberch (Torello Spain), and Joao Poli (Londrina, Brazil) add further depth to the Gardner-Webb lineup and give Griffith a wealth of options heading into the season.

"We have good doubles 1-3, we have good senior leadership, and we have tremendous depth," said Griffith. "With our depth, we are covered and can go nine deep. I am really looking forward to our matches early on, and the conference schedule down the road."

Gardner-Webb's season-opening match versus the Tar Heels is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
