Boiling Springs, N.C. - Gardner-Webb's men's tennis team will travel outside the state of North Carolina for the first time this season, as the Runnin' Bulldogs travel to West Point, N.Y. for the Army Challenge this weekend, Friday, January 25 through Sunday, January 27.

GWU (0-1) is coming off a 6-1 defeat at the hands of the 18th ranked UNC Tar Heels, and will look to continue to build momentum this weekend.

Gardner-Webb's 2013 lineup figures to display strong depth from top-to-bottom. Head coach Mike Griffith says he feels confident that his squad can go nine-deep; lineup changes, in the early going, look to be frequent as the team shuffles itself into a reliable rotation heading forward.

The depth coach Griffith referenced was apparent in the season-opening match at UNC, when eight Runnin' Bulldogs saw the court in doubles, singles, or both. Two freshmen, Benjamin Kaszás and Nikita Zverkov, competed in the season-opener. Kaszás competed at No. 3 singles as well as No. 3 doubles.

Gardner-Webb also displayed reliable depth at the 4-6 singles positions, pushing UNC's players in all three matches. Sophomore Brendan Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland), after dropping the first set at No. 6 singles, responded to win two straight sets and knock off the Tar Heel's Maik Ulrich 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The Runnin' Bulldogs entire rotation will be tested at this weekend's Army Challenge. In addition to the Black Knights of Army, GWU will also face the UNC Greensboro Spartans and the Marist Red Foxes.

Led by conference player of the year Asika Isoh, Army compiled a 16-13 record last season en route to a runner-up finish in the Patriot League. Marist went 15-6 last year and advanced to the second round of the MAAC tournament. UNCG, 9-13 overall and 6-4 in the Southern Conference last season, will look to defend its 5-2 win over the Runnin' Bulldogs last season without 2012 SoCon player of the year Orcun Seyrek.

Competition at this weekend's Army Challenge opens Friday afternoon.
