The home-opening win moves Gardner-Webb to 1-3 early in the 2013 season.
To open the match, GWU found itself in a dogfight at all three positions, as Augusta State (1-1) came out firing on the road. Midway through doubles play, the Runnin' Bulldogs trailed at all three positions.
After the Jaguars clinched a win at No. 3 doubles, the senior tandem of Matthew Parker (Marietta, Ga.) and Adam Knutsson-Sundblad dug deep for a tough 8-6 win versus Cabellos/Guimaraes at No. 1 doubles.
Freshman Nikita Zverkov (Moscow, Russia) and sophomore Ernest Alberch would take it from there. The pair outlasted ASU's Labas/Brunei pairing for a point-clinching 8-7 (3) win at No. 2 doubles.
Singles play proved to be less dramatic, with Gardner-Webb riding the momentum of two doubles wins to garner straight set wins at four singles spots. Knutsson-Sundblad (Gothenburg, Sweden) won at No. 1 singles, improving to 2-0 on the week at that position with a 6-4, 6-2 against Victor Cabellos.
A win at No. 2 from Benjamin Kaszás (Budapest, Hungary) put the Runnin' Bulldogs up 3-0. The powerful freshman defeated Jon Labas by a 6-2, 6-3 margin.
Senior Roman Piftor (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) got the clinching point for Gardner-Webb with a win at No. 3 singles. Piftor pulled away from the Jaguars' Victor Guimaraes for a 6-1, 6-2 triumph.
Gardner-Webb also got a straight set win from sophomore Brendan Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland), who improved to 3-1 in singles play on the season after Saturday's win. Dempsey knocked off Gustavo D'Ascenzi 6-2, 7-5.
With the outcome determined, Alberch (Torello, Spain) won at No. 4 singles by tiebreak, outlasting Romain Brunei to score a 6-2, 6-7, 10-4 win.
Gardner-Webb's men's tennis team travels to play Wofford on Thursday, February 14 at 2:30 p.m. prior to returning home for a match versus Brevard on Friday, February 15 at 2:30 p.m.
