CHARLOTTE, N.C. (www.BigSouthSports.com) - Gardner-Webb University freshman Alex Young has been selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week, the League announced today.
Wednesday's announcement marks the second time this season Young has earned Big South Field Athlete of the Week honors in this his first season in the collegiate ranks.
Young, a freshman from LaVergne, Tenn., posted a pair of top finishes over the weekend at the Clemson Invitational. His mark of 53' 11" in the shot put set the Gardner-Webb standard in the event, while his mark of 64' 2" in the weight throw also broke the Gardner-Webb school record. Young currently ranks No. 6 in the shot put and No. 5 in the weight throw on the Big South's All-Time Performance List.
Young earned his first Big South Athlete of the Week nod on January 23 following a stellar weekend at the Niswonger Invitational which included an individual title in the shot put (51' 9") and posting a season best and Top 5 performance in the weight throw (57' 3"). In all, Young has won four events (two weight throw, two shot put) and set two school records this season.
Gardner-Webb track & field is set to compete in the Appalachian State Pre-Conference meet on Friday, February 15 in preparation for 2013 Big South Conference Indoor Championships (Feb. 21-22) in Winston-Salem, N.C.
