Boone, N.C. - Four different Runnin' Bulldogs won individual events as Gardner-Webb track & field participated at the Appalachian Pre-Conference meet in its final tuneup prior to Big South Championships next weekend.
Senior Ivana Hughes (Evans, Ga.) posted the top time in the 400 m dash, handing Gardner-Webb a 1st place finish after racing to a personal best time of 56.99. Hughes, the reigning 400 m Outdoor champ in the Big South Conference, shaved .31 off her previous best 400 m Indoor time a week before the 2012-13 Big South Indoor Championship.
Senior Taylor Cook (Boone, N.C.) rose up for a personal best performance in the women's pole vault, clearing 3.67 m (12' .5") to take 3rd place in the event. Cook bettered her previous high by .12 m.
Tacking on a 5th place finish in the event for the Runnin' Bulldogs was freshman vaulter Megan Melton (Riverside, Calif.), who achieved a season-best height of 3.37 m.
Gardner-Webb freshman Sarah Perkins (Gorham, Maine) achieved a 2nd place finish in the women's 55 m hurdles. The performance from Perkins earned her a Top 2 mark in the event, as she crossed the finish line at 8.98.
Perkins added an individual victory in the 200 m dash, achieving a season best time of 26.29. Senior T'Keyah Bell (Cherryville, N.C.) ran to a 2nd place finish, following Perkins with a personal best time of 26.54.
Senior Yazzming Lee (Paterson, N.J.) picked up a 4th place finish to lead the Runnin' Bulldog women in the weight throw at 15.08 m.
Lee also led the way in the shot put with a 5th place finish, posting a season best mark of 11.97 m. Junior Kyntoya Hansford (Miami, Fla.) took 6th after throwing a season best 11.60 m, and the junior tandem of Hurley and Moody took 8th (10.67 m, personal best) and 9th (10.55 m) respectively.
A quartet of Runnin' Bulldogs competed in the women's high jump. Freshmen Kaylan Myers (Lexington, N.C.) and Jessica Norris (Johnson City, Tenn.) tied for 3rd in the event after each cleared 1.51 m. Juniors Olivia Moody (Plano, Ill.) and Kristen Hurley (Columbia, Conn.) took 5th and 6th in the event, posting heights of 1.51 m (season best) and 1.46 m respectively.
In the 1 mile run, Katie Spiro posted the 10th best time in the event. The junior from Sylva, N.C. led the Runnin' Bulldog women with a time of 5:50.24.
Bell (Cherryville, N.C.) led GWU in the women's 55 m dash after sprinting home for a time of 7.60 in the event. Junior Ashley Slate (High Point, N.C.) achieved a new personal best and the 10th fastest event time at 7.83, and sophomore Nicole Saxton (Tampa, Fla.) recorded the 11th fastest time at 7.93.
Saxton and Slate picked up times of 42.29 and 46.00 respectively in the women's 300 m dash.
A 5th place finish from Ariel Zimmerman (Williamsburg, Va.) led the Runnin' Bulldogs in the women's 800 m run. Zimmerman's season best 2:21.78 clocking was followed by the 8th fastest time in the event for senior Leah Steinke (Green Cove Springs, Fla.), who posted a time of 2:32.68 in the event.
Gardner-Webb's throwers continued its excellent season in the men's shot put, putting four in the Top 10 of the event. Freshman Alex Young (LaVergne, Tenn.) won the event, recording his fifth individual title of his rookie campaign after throwing 15.83 m. Junior Carson Sears (Suwanee, Ga.) backed up Young's performance, tossing 15.50 m, 2nd best in the event.
Freshmen A.J. White and Xavier Stewart added 7th and 9th place showings in the event, as the pair of Runnin' Bulldog rookies achieved marks of 13.72 m and 13.57 m (season best) respectively.
In the men's weight throw, Young (LaVergne, Tenn.) led the way, taking 3rd place with a distance of 17.90 m. Sears (Suwanee, Ga.) followed closely in 4th after throwing 17.57 m in the event.
Nathan Padfield (LaVergne, Tenn.) added a 9th place finish with a best-ever performance. The sophomore threw 13.46 m, and White (Hurricane, W.Va.) achieved the 10th furthest distance in the event at a personal best 12.92 m.
Senior Andy Scates (Boiling Springs, N.C.) finished 13th in the shot put for the Runnin' Bulldogs after tossing 12.59 m.
Gardner-Webb picked up another win in the men's 800 m run, sweeping the men's and women's events after senior Josiah Stanton-Brooks (Seattle, Wash.) outpaced the field for a season best time of 1:54.99.
Sophomore Nick Rogers (Monroe, Ga.) finished the event in a season best 2:07.80, and freshman Will Cottrell (Waxhaw, N.C.) crossed the finish line at 2:15.63. Cottrell added a time of 40.35 in the men's 300 m dash, and Rogers finished the event in 43.43.
After posting the 4th best 55 m hurdles time during prelims, Johnathan Parks (Douglassville, Ga.) moved up in finals to take 3rd in event finals, leading the GWU men with a time of 7.79. Freshman Titus Hamilton (Blair, Neb.) was 6th in the event after racing to a time of 8.81 during finals of the event.
Parks added a 2nd place finish in the men's 200 m dash after racing for a personal best time of 22.46 in the event. Sophomore Miles Harris timed in at 24.02, 4th fastest in the event.
In the men's high jump, Gardner-Webb got a 4th place finish from Harris. The Atlanta, Ga. native cleared 1.84 m to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs in the event.
Freshman Dillon Suddreth (Hickory, N.C.) achieved a height of 1.79 m to take 5th place in the event, and Bell (Greensboro, N.C.) posted the 6th best height at 1.69 m.
Gardner-Webb got a 4th place effort in the men's pole vault, as freshman Tyler Marsengill (Rock Hill, S.C.) vaulted 4.31 m in the event.
The Runnin' Bulldogs' track & field squad heads to Winston-Salem, N.C. for the 2013 Big South Conference Championship meet Thursday, February 21 through Friday, February 22.
