Greensboro, N.C. - The Runnin' Bulldogs won every match in which it participated on Wednesday, including the third straight doubles win for Jenny Lunde and Erica White, as Gardner-Webb women's tennis defeated North Carolina A&T on the road by a score of 6-1.
The win pushes GWU to 2-4 early in the 2013 season.
Gardner-Webb won its second non-conference match of the season thanks to a consistent effort throughout the day, winning at No.'s 1 and 2 doubles and at No.'s 1-5 singles, all the matches in which the Runnin' Bulldogs fielded a player.
To start the day, White and Lunde teamed up at No. 1 doubles to post the duo's third consecutive win at the position. The senior/junior tandem won 8-0 over the Aggies' Stallin/Austin.
At No. 2 doubles, GWU's Yasmin Doost and Rokia Sacko sealed the doubles point with an 8-1 win. Doost and Sacko bettered Burrage/Scott from North Carolina A&T to put the Runnin' Bulldogs up 1-0.
In singles play, Gardner-Webb rolled to five singles wins. White (Charleston, W.Va.) improved her season record to 5-1 at No. 1 singles on the year with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep against Austin of North Carolina A&T. Lunde held down the No. 2 spot for the Runnin' Bulldogs with another 6-0, 6-0 win after besting the Aggies' Stallings.
Doost, a sophomore from Bray, Maidenhead, England, recorded a 6-2, 6-0 win over Scott at the No. 3 position.
At No.'s 4 and 5 singles, GWU got wins from a pair of freshmen to round out the squad's scoring. Valeriia Popko (St. Petersburg, Russia) won 6-0, 6-0 over Burrage at the No. 4 slot, and Sacko (Montreal, Canada) posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Perkins at No. 5 singles for Gardner-Webb.
Both freshmen evened their singles season record at 3-3.
Gardner-Webb is scheduled to open Big South play on Saturday when Campbell visits Boiling Springs for a 2:00 p.m. match at the Webb Tennis Complex.
