Coming off a successful season for the women’s tennis squad, perhaps highlighted by fielding the Big South Player of the Year (Erica White), GWU inserts quality players into its lineup for the upcoming season with its two newest signees.
White (Rock Hill, S.C.), labeled as a three-star recruit by www.tennisrecruiting.net, currently holds a top 300 national ranking as well as being ranked as the tenth best player in the state of South Carolina. Earlier this season, White was ranked as highly as 277th among U.S. high school tennis players.
White was a standout at Rock Hill High School under the direction of coach Christine Wesson, having received All-State designation in 2010, 2011, and 2012 as the Bearcats’ No. 1 player as well as having been named as the Rock Hill Herald All-Area Girls Tennis Player of the Year in 2010.
In 2012, White put together an undefeated singles record, going 15-0 at Rock Hill High School. The Bearcats’ standout was rewarded by being selected to as a North-South All-Star by the South Carolina Coaches Association. White, who competed for Rock Hill High School beginning as a 7th grade student, was also coached by Thiago Ruffoni at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.
Mary Walker Mixon will look to extend an outstanding high school playing career with the Runnin’ Bulldogs. A two-star recruit on www.tennisrecruiting.net, she has been ranked as highly as No. 403 nationally.
Additionally, the Atlanta, Ga. native, who attended Riverwood International Charter School, is ranked as the 25th best player in the state of Georgia.
Both Catherine White and Mary Walker Mixon are key signings for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, who face the daunting task of replacing its No. 1 player Erica White. The talented duo will look to build off their successful pre-collegiate careers and continue the tradition of excellence on and off the court for Gardner-Webb women’s tennis.
