DAVIDSON, N.C. - Gardner-Webb had its fifth student-athlete named to a College Football Performance Awards (CFPA) Watch List, as versatile J.J. Hubbard earned the nod as an all-purpose back.

Hubbard (Tampa, Fla. / Robinson HS) joined teammates Tanner Burch (linebacker), Kenny Cook (receiver), Seth Cranfill (tight end) and Preston Pemasa (defensive line) on the organization's FCS positional watch lists heading into the 2013 season.

The 5-foot-8, 170-pound junior earned second-team All-Big South Conference honors last season as both a kickoff return man and punt returner. He led the league with an average of 15.2 yards per punt return, including a 47-yarder vs. VMI that helped spark Gardner-Webb's second-half surge in a 38-7 win. He had a season-long 50-yarder vs. Mid America Nazarene to set up a score.

Hubbard's proficiency returning punts helped Gardner-Webb rank No. 10 nationally in team average per return among FCS programs. Hubbard was honored as National FCS Punt Returner of the Week by CFPA following his effort against VMI.

Hubbard also ranked third in the league in kickoff return average, posting 22.1 yards per return on a league-high 37 opportunities, with a long return of 73 yards at Richmond.

He ranked sixth in the league with an average of 98.0 all-purpose yards per game, leading the team in that category. Hubbard carried the football 32 times for 109 yards, with a 47-yard dash to the end zone at No. 10 Stony Brook one of his two rushing touchdowns on the season. The slippery standout also caught four passes for 13 yards.

Hubbard had a 79-yard kickoff return for a touchdown as a freshman at VMI.

Hubbard figures to play a major role in Gardner-Webb's new spread offensive scheme, but will remain the team's primary kickoff and punt return man as well. He was very effective at running back during spring practice.

Gardner-Webb kicks off the 2013 season at home on Saturday, August 31 against Furman. Start time is set for 6:00 pm in Ernest W. Spangler Stadium.
