CONWAY, S.C. - Gardner-Webb women’s basketball tips off Big South Conference play Thursday, battling the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina (4-3) at 5:00 pm at HTC Arena.

The Runnin’ Bulldogs (4-2) are playing the third of four consecutive road games, and will do so Thursday on the floor that will also host the most important event of the season – the Big South Conference Basketball Championship tournament in March.

Gardner-Webb is coming off a tough, 78-74, loss at Davidson this past Saturday. GWU trailed by as many as 20 points in the second half after a slow start, but put forth a furious and gritty rally to pull as close as two points in the closing seconds. Davidson made enough free throws down the stretch to hold off Rick Reeves’ squad at Belk Arena.

Although its scoring has dropped away from home, averaging 66.0 points per game in two road dates, Gardner-Webb has continued to get consistent production from All-Big South center Catrina Green – who is averaging 15.5 points and 6.5 rebounds away from home this season. Green is shooting 61.9 percent in the two road losses, and has pulled down more than half of her rebounds on the offensive end.

Perimeter shooting was a strength for Gardner-Webb during its 4-0 start to the season, with Jasmine Dale (41.7 percent) and Kiera Currie (42.9 percent) pacing that effort. Dale averaged 11.0 points during the quick start to the season, with Green (16.3 ppg) and Olivia Parker (9.8 ppg) also piling up impressive numbers inside.

Overall, Green is averaging nearly a double-double with 16.0 points and 9.5 boards per game in six starts. GWU still holds a +7 rebounding edge over its opponents on the season and a +8 edge overall in scoring margin.

Thursday night will be a rematch of an epic regular season battle from last season, as Gardner-Webb dropped a 70-67 overtime decision at HTC Arena on February 16. Mayhana Dunovant (13 points), Jessica Heilig (12 points) and Olivia Parker (12 points) paced GWU in that game, which saw the Runnin’ Bulldogs fall victim to a Coastal Carolina rally in the second half that erased a 31-21 halftime lead for Gardner-Webb.

GWU exacted revenge in the 2012 Big South Conference Basketball Championship tournament, however, knocking the host Chanticleers out in the opening round by a 64-60 margin.

Green was the star of that meeting, going for 18 points and 11 rebounds on 8-of-11 shooting. Parker (16 points, 10 rebounds) and Candace Brown (14 points, 11 rebounds) also supplied double-doubles for GWU, which held a dominant 50-35 edge on the backboards.

Thursday’s game will air live on the Big South Network (
