Gardner-Webb (4-3, 0-1 Big South) dropped its third game in a row, part of a four-game road trip that wraps up Saturday night at Presbyterian.
The Chanticleers (5-3, 1-0 Big South) led 36-30 at halftime, and held off Gardner-Webb in the early stages of the second half.
Catrina Green made the score 58-52 with a score with 9:15 left in the game, however, giving the Runnin’ Bulldogs life midway through the half – but Coastal responded to that score with a 19-6 run that spanned nearly eight minutes and put the game away.
A 3-pointer by the Chanticleers’ Alexx Puckett with 1:34 left put the hosts up 80-61 and Coastal would close it out from there.
The game was a nip-and-tuck affair throughout the first half, with the lead changing hands eight times and the score tied three times.
Gardner-Webb last held the lead at 21-20 after a Green layup with 8:27 before the half.
Coastal took the lead for good on a Puckett bucket with 7:13 to play, and took its 36-30 lead when Kayla Cooks drained a 3-pointer with just two seconds before the halftime buzzer.
Gardner-Webb shot 35.2 percent for the game, and made just 5-of-18 from long distance.
Forward Jessica Heilig led the way with 15 points, Jasmine Dale added 14 markers and Green finished with 11 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots. Candace Brown added nine points and seven boards and Olivia Parker also had a near double-double with eight points and eight rebounds.
The two teams combined for 43 turnovers Thursday, and Coastal took a 50-40 edge on the backboards by game’s end.
Puckett led all scorers with 24 points and 11 boards, and guard A.J. Jordan added 23 points. The Chanticleers shot 46.5 percent for the game from the floor and made 14-of-18 from the free throw line.
Gardner-Webb will get back to action on Saturday night at 7:00 in Clinton, S.C., battling Presbyterian in its fourth road game in a row. The game will air live on the Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com).
