Chattanooga, Tenn. - Gardner-Webb won three singles matches, but fell 4-3 to host Chattanooga Sunday in a match in which 4 of 6 singles matches came down to three-set tiebreaks.
With the loss, GWU falls to 2-4 on the year.
The highly competitive match also saw the deciding doubles match go down to a tiebreak. Chattanooga won at the #1 doubles position, but the duo of Ernest Alberch/Matthew Parker defeated the Mocs' Ankit Chopra/Stephen Crofford 8-5 to force the deciding match. The Runnin' Bulldogs' Brendan Dempsey and Blake Dunlap dropped a hard-fought 9-8 (7-2) to decision as Chattanooga won the point.
Dempsey (Dublin, Ireland) won his fourth consecutive singles match, dominating a 6-0, 6-0 decision at #6 singles to get the Runnin' Bulldogs on the board.
After the Mocs won at #5 singles, Gardner-Webb battled in the remaining matches to overcome the 2-1 deficit. Roman Piftor (Tashkent, Uzbekistan) won 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 over Manuel Barroatavena at #4 and Korhan Ates (Istanbul, Turkey) outlasted the Mocs' Roberto Vieira 7-6 (7-3), 3-6, 7-5 at the #1 position for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Chattanooga would win at #2 and #3 to provide the final margin.
Gardner-Webb will be back in action at Elon on Saturday, February 18. The match is scheduled for a 1:30 p.m. start time.
