Ashland, Ohio - Gardner-Webb struggled on the mat at the 22nd Annual Wendy's Classic, falling to Purdue, Olivet and Eastern Michigan in dual match action at Ashland University in Ashland, Ohio.
In the first match of the day, the Runnin' Bulldogs were overmatched from top to bottom, as Gardner-Webb fell to nationally ranked Purdue of the Big Ten, 48-0.
In the match versus the Boilermakers, GWU suffered four pin fall losses and a technical foul loss.
At 133, freshman Alex Hamm suffered an 11-4 loss to Akif Erin of Purdue, while Richie Spicel suffered a 13-6 loss to Jake Fleckenstein at 141 and Alex Medved lost a tough 11-8 decision to Sam Patacsil of Purdue to have his winning-streak snapped at four in a row.
At noon the Runnin' Bulldogs matched up with Olivet on the mat and found themselves down early 7-0 with back-to-back losses at 125 and 133.
Spicel then picked up a 12-5 win over Tucker of Olivet at 141, which was followed by a 7-4 decision win by Ryan Medved at 149.
At 157 Alex Medved defeated Fuller 8-0 to earn a major decision win and put GWU up for the first time at 10-7.
However, Olivet ran off three straight wins to take a 17-10 lead heading into the final two matches.
At 197, redshirt-sophomore Travis Porter defeated Leonard 4-3 to cut Olivet lead to four at 17-13. However, the Runnin' Bulldogs would ultimately suffer a 23-13 loss due to a forfeit at the heavyweight spot.
In Gardner-Webb's third match of the day, the Runnin' Bulldogs went up against a very tough Eastern Michigan team that nearly swept GWU, taking nine of the 10 bouts to earn the 43-3 win.
Spicel was the lone victor for GWU, as the redshirt-sophomore picked up a 6-1 win over LeHolm at 141.
The Runnin' Bulldogs will return to action on Friday night, January 21st, as Gardner-Webb will host the Duke Blue Devils at 7 p.m. on the campus of Gardner-Webb University.
