SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Gardner-Webb rapped out 14 hits and scored in six different innings Wednesday to take an 8-5 win at USC Upstate.

A slugger's pace early saw the two teams combine for 10 runs through three innings, with Upstate (11-20) tying the game, 5-5, in the bottom half of the third. Gardner-Webb (18-7-1) took the lead for good in the fourth, however, as Daniel Merck led off with a double and Jake Watts followed with a single to make the score 6-5.

The Gardner-Webb bullpen took over from there, keeping the Spartans scoreless the rest of the way - including stranding the bases loaded twice.

Brock Wilson (3-0) hurled 2.1 scoreless innings for the win and Adam Izokovic came on for his fourth save of the season in the ninth. Izokovic now has 12 saves for his career at Gardner-Webb, which is four shy of the school record.

The Runnin' Bulldogs got solo home runs from Watts and Adam McFarland to jump out to a 5-2 lead in the top of the third, before Upstate matched that tally in the bottom half to tie the game.

GWU got a two-out single from Merck to drive home Danny Yelverton for an insurance run in the eighth, and turned a Zeke Blanton walk into a run with two outs in the ninth - as Blanton raced home all the way from first on Brad Collins' single to left for the final margin.

USC Upstate loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, sandwiching a pair of rolling singles around a walk - but Izokovic recovered to get the final out on a shallow pop up to centerfield.

Collins (3-for-5, RBI), Merck (2-for-5, 2B, RBI), Watts (2-for-5, HR, 3 RBI), Dusty Quattlebaum (2-for-5, 2B, run) and McFarland (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) paced Gardner-Webb's offense Wednesday night.

USC Upstate got two hits from five different players and finished with 13 safeties for the game. Jordan Rusk (1-3) was saddled with the loss in relief, allowing two runs in 5.1 effective innings (fie strikeouts, five hits).

Gardner-Webb will turn its attention back to Big South Conference play this weekend, hosting Charleston Southern for a three-game series beginning on Friday night at 6:00 at John Henry Moss Stadium / Bill Masters Field.
