The Chanticleers (23-12, 9-2 Big South) sent 11 men to the plate in the inning, collecting three doubles off of GWU reliever Brock Wilson in the surge. That burst pushed the Coastal Carolina lead to 7-0 - and the lead would reach 8-0 until Gardner-Webb (20-12-1, 6-8 Big South) got on the board in the ninth.
Scott Coleman got things started with a single in the final at bat for GWU, pinch hitter Aaron Haynes walked, and Matt Sapp belted a first-pitch fastball over the wall for a three-run home run and what would be the final margin.
Coastal Carolina's Matt Rein overcame a slow start for the win, pitching around three first-inning hits without allowing a run - and recovering to retire 18 of the next 22 batters he faced. Rein (5-1) fanned nine batters in 7.0 innings for the win.
Starter Erik Heiligenstadt (2-3) took the loss for Gardner-Webb, allowing one unearned run in 1.0 inning of work. Wilson worked 2.2 innings in relief, allowing six earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Brandon Boling was solid in closing out the game, hurling 4.1 innings and allowing just one run on four strikeouts.
Daniel Merck, Sapp and Coleman each had two hits to pace Gardner-Webb's eight-hit attack on offense.
Gardner-Webb and Coastal Carolina will conclude the three-game series Sunday at 2 pm.
