The Runnin' Bulldogs (5-0-1) won the opener, 7-0.
Rundio had two of Gardner-Webb's three hits in the game, blasting a solo home run in the second. The Runnin' Bulldogs, as has become the them of the season to date, got stellar pitching throughout.
Morehead State (3-4) jumped out to a 2-0 lead after its first two at bats. Duran Elmore led off the game by sneaking a double inside the bag at first. He moved to third on a balk and scored on a passed ball for an early 1-0 advantage.
After Alan Mocahbee singled with one out in the second, the soaked turf bit the Runnin' Bulldogs. Catcher Drew Williams hit a line drive to center that turned into a triple when Alex Newman slipped and fell - scoring Mocahbee from first for a 2-0 lead.
Rundio got Gardner-Webb back into things with one out in the second, hammering a fastball deep over the fence in left to trim the lead to 2-1. The score would remain the same until the ninth, as Morehead State southpaw Noah Smallwood settled in and didn't allow a hit the rest of his outing.
The Eagles went to the bullpen clinging to their 2-1 lead in the ninth. Closer Matt Duncan walked pinch hitter John Harris to lead off the frame, then Ryan Hodge roped a single through the left side. Duncan intentionally walked Scott Coleman after a wild pitch put pinch runner Taylor Fisher and Hodge in scoring position - then walked Brad Collins to drive in the tying run.
Rundio then stepped to the dish and squared up a fastball to drive home Hodge for the game winner.
Freshman Brad Haymes (1-0) picked up the mound win, hurling a perfect ninth that included a pair of big strikeouts. Haymes worked a scoreless inning in Saturday's opener as well.
Andrew Barnett hurled 6.0 innings and fanned eight in a no decision, scattering five hits and allowing just one earned run. Jeff Howell worked 2.0 scoreless relief innings for the Runnin' Bulldogs before Haymes came in for the ninth inning.
Gardner-Webb's defense turned three big double plays in the game. Rundio (2-for-4, HR, 2 RBI) was the star offensively for the 'Dogs. Hodge (1-for-3, run) had the other safety for Gardner-Webb.
Smallwood was magnificent through 8.0 innings for the Eagles, allowing just one hit and striking out eight. Duncan (0-1) took the loss, allowing two runs without recording an out.
Morehead State had six hits in the game, with Nick Duff (2-for-4) and Mocahbee (2-for-4) leading the way.
The two teams will wrap up the four-game series on Sunday at 1:00 pm. The game will be carried live via video stream on the Big South Network (bigsouthsports.com).
